Should administering IQ tests and other tests like the SATs continue to be the #1 method of measuring a person's intelligence?

You can't put a number on intelligence.

And IQ tests are dumb. Only good for insults.

Oh and I think the IQ test is no longer issued in the UK. The UK has a test called the SAT, but they are very different.

The SAT you speak of is only issued in the US.

SAT is not really a true measure of intelligence. Honestly, everyone is more intelligent in some areas then others, why issue these, cuz I sure as hell know that the SATS arent asking me Street Wise questions or weapons on Guns, both which save my life.....bastards Very Happy

Grr I standardized tests, SATs, things like that.

It's just a simplified way for school systems to decide whether a student is "good" or "needs special help, etc." [Notice how school systems NEVER say anything like "Poor" for bad grades, in it's place they always put "special blah blah blah"...

Maybe that's a good thing, and maybe it's a bad thing.

But just having one test to determine what colleges you can get in to and the like is just silly. I think they should start to implement a portfolio system where they look at a student's work throughout the year, rather than one quick snapshot during test time.

However, that might not be feasible because it would require hours to examine each child, and there's just not that much money going around...
ESPECIALLY with "Dubya" cutting funding to his own "No Child Left Behind" program or whatever it's called... but that's a topic for the Politics section.

All in all, the testing situation is a predicament, and I guess the school systems all just chose tests and went with them because they were the cheapest alternative.

"The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect "domestic security." Given the difficulty of defining the domestic security interest, the danger of abuse in acting to protect that interest becomes apparent. --U.S. Supreme Court decision (407 U.S. 297 (1972)

Actually, I never took an IQ test. They never gave it to me in the UK and I havn't recieved one here.

But again, you can't put a number on intelligence.

Otherwise schools wouldn't give the test when students are most awake and aware, and they wouldn't tell you to sleep early blah blah.....

Personally I love standardized testing, I do much better on the big tests than any of the other things that happen throughout a school year.

Well the SAT only measure how well you take the SAT. Some people study hard and prepare for it while others don't prepare at all. The people that prepare will do better in general than the people who do not. So in a way it determines a person's level of dedication, generally speaking of course. I don't think you can measure a person's intelligence level with a test.
I haven't taken the ACT or anything else yet.
