I have a similar problem. When I boot up the computer it makes a loud "Wherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise. Once the computer has been on for 10mins it stops. My brothers is doing the same. Sometimes I fix it by kicking my tower but that could lead to bigger problems.

Well from very reason experience, my brothers labtop made a similar noise at boot up. It did this for 3 months and well.....4 days ago..... his motherboard is no more. Sad A couple of days before that my friend's computer did that in the middle of the night (woke him up) and it soon stopped. Later on, he heard it again but then everything went silent...

Who knows whats going on in yours.....just make sure you have backups

Really, only YOU, the user of the computer, can know your hard drive sounds. Using it everyday, you should know the different noises your hard drive makes--what is normal and such, etc. Razz You should know if something is wrong because you hear a noise that you've never heard before, but if you're still not sure a quick search on google about hard drive noises should yield an site on IBM about hard drive noises.

And you should also know that on my computer, the CD drive is usually the culprit behind the noise, since it vibrates so much the cover rattles, so you should make sure of the source of the disturbance.

And what DrasticDr was talking about, I had the exact same problem. Cause? The fan. Solution? A powerful vacuum blowing out the dust on the fan and its heatsink.

YEa thats your fan, it did it on my old CPU - just give it a good smack in the fan cover and it should stop =)

In the end it doesn't matter if you are who you say you are. You will still mean nothing to me.

If you need a new hard drive, newegg.com is having an awesome sale right now on Western Digital drives. My dad purchased two 120 gb 8 mb cache drives for $92 each. Very Happy

If that sale (maybe was) was going on 2 weeks ago, I could have built a new computer for my bro....besides him buying a stock one *shudders*

My stock computer owns your computer. You just gotta know how to use it. It's like having a retarded friend. Just have to be gentle and nice. Aww what am I saying, the ads and all the other shit make it horrible. Atleast I have a good video card. Smile

Yes, I would say it's a 99.9% probability that the sounds are simply from an old fan. I've had this problem MANY a time before, and I am taking A+ certification (PC maintenace, assembly and repair) right now. It's easy to replace, and relatively cheap.

However, NOT replacing it will cause severe overheating damage down the road. Get it done ASAP, before you fry your machine!
