I hope it's all just posturing. It seems to me that they are just taking advantage of the US being in the spotlight to taunt us and do some smack-talking.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/asiapcf/east/04/24/nkorea.us/index.html

Quote:

A source said Gen. Li Gun, North Korea's representative to the talks in Beijing, China, told U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly, "blatantly and boldly" that the country has nuclear weapons and then asked, "Now what are you going to do about it?"

Quote:

"The situation on the Korean Peninsula is so tense that a war may break out any moment due to the U.S. moves," the North's KCNA news agency.

It said relations with the United States had hit "rock bottom" because President Bush named North Korea as part of an "axis of evil," along with Iran and Iraq.

Quote:

The North's Korea People's Army vowed to "put all people under arms and turn the whole country into a fortress" and urged its soldiers to become "human bombs and fighters ready to blow up themselves" to protect leader Kim Jong Il (search).

"If the U.S. imperialists and their followers intrude into even an inch of the inviolable sky, land and sea of the (North) ... the (army) will deal merciless deadly blows at the aggressors," North Korean Defense Minister Kim Il Chol was quoted as saying by KCNA.

North Korea and China fought against the United States in the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended without a peace treaty. North Korea and Washington have no formal relations and are still technically at war.

China, the North's ally and major aid donor, nevertheless says it doesn't want Pyongyang to acquire nuclear weapons and has appealed for a negotiated settlement to the crisis.

You forgot this one. This helps us, because China has always feared the day N. Korea would obtain nukes. That is why China REFUSED to help N. Korea get nukes. They know N. Korea + nukes = destabilized region.

If we do attack, we may not see a full comitment from China to help protect N. Korea. To avoid a Chinese assult I would assure China that they would hold a major role in restructuring N. Korea. We can handle N. Korea, but believe me, the U.S. can't handle 1 billion Chinese Regulars. The public and the press would have a field day with casualty lists. Compinsate(humor) China and if we go to war it will be just as quick as the Iraqi war. Don't and China will feel threatened to assist N. Korea in fear that the U.S. won't stop there.

You have to remember the Korean Conflict was the bloodiest war ever. Millions of people civilian and military died, and billions of dollars spent.

N. Korea signed a pact agreeing not to develope WMD. Yet they have. It takes years to get as far as they are now. They violated this pact, even when that FUCK NOD Jimmy Carter claimed he got N. Korea to stop development. And that asshole gat a Nobel Peace Prize for it (Strip him of that prize. He failed).

I have a run so I will finish later.

R.I.P. TreyD. You will be missed, but not forgotten.

I think bloodiest war is a title reserved for ww2. Just a point that stood out in your statement I didn't like above the rest of it. Well I beleive Canada earned some money from the korean war. So it was good for us, but I guess bad for the people who were fighting. But still do you beleive them claiming they had nuclear weapons? Hey, maybe their nuclear weapon is sucidally melting down a nuclear powerplant when under attack. But then again if they do have them then your country is, well, screwed royally. Because Korea has the means to use them and the longer you wait the farther they can send them. But then there is all the stalling you did. If you had delt with this in means other then negotiations then this problem could have been dodged. Why do I care about this issue rather then Iraq? Because iraq was decades from building something that could touch Canada. Korea is probably only years from something that could reach out and touch us. I don't really fear largely a nuclear strike on Canada. But fallout, the sudden need to go to war because our dang neighbour is tied to our tails, the economic problems (many thanks to capitalism inventing the stock market, the source of economic crisies), the broken trade links, the division of the nation on supporting the neighbour tied to our tails, the crashing down of the UN (I doubt many countries would be so eager to fight something that has weapons of large scale mass destrution), the opertunistic terrorists, the panicing and wildly thrashing neighbour tied to our tails, the day(s) the world would stand still, the sudden reactions of religous groups, the shouting and yelping of people who saw this brewing and are angry of inaction, the fear that would circulate the population, the sudden jolt of military presence in the pacific rim and the destabilization of the region, the outcry of our neighbour retaliating with nuclear weapons (I can see the US doing this but it does seem rather farfetched, but who knows what they can do in a fit of rage, the constant coverage of this on the news interupting my life, the refugees of the attack (assuming it is close to the Canadian border there might be displaced civilians coming here), the grounding of aircraft, the Canadians in the target area, I will continue but I need a thinking break. But I have a very vivid image of what will happen if they strike the US.

wow commando, i never realized how socialistic you were.
anyway... i'm not too concerned about north korea and i don't think washington really is either. north korea has no desire to start a war with anyone. they know that if they do, they won't have the support of the soviet union and china to back them up. they would be all alone. they can't even rely on alqueda terrorists and suicide bombers crossing their boarders to help them out. they can launch a missle or two, but then what? their missles have only a slim chance of making it anywhere except MAYBE south korea. while they have the range to reach los angles(not necessarially a bad thing) they would most likely be shot down shortly after leaving n.korea. if they head toward japan, they might make it only if it were a surprize attack.
so anyway, they launch a missle or two or more, maybe hit a target or two, then what? they would face not only the us, but south korean, russian, japanese, chinese and other un forces which would decimate them.
i doubt you would even see the "concern" for n.korean citizens that you saw for iraqis because we are not so concerned about pissing off the muslim world.
north korea just wants money. they've done the same crap before. they were just thrown thru a loop this time because bush didn't fall for the blackmailing crap. now they are just trying to get anything they can so they can save face while backing down so they don't get attacked.
not to change the subject, but this is why the anti-war argument of "north korea is more dangerous" doesn't really hold water. iraq was always a more serious situation than north korea.

If you see a rock thrown at your fan, do you catch it before it mangles the blades? What if that rock started growing in flight? What if that rock also grew harder while it was flying? You can still catch it. Would you watching while it flew faster toward the fan? Would you watch while it in slow motion as it catches the air from the blades? Would you watch as it hits and knocks a blade of the fan? Then, could you sit and honestly think to yourself you didn't make a big mistake not catching it?

Yes, let's all make a problem bigger then it should be. Let's give them more nuclear power plants. Let's give them more money. Let's give them time to improve their missiles. Let's give them time to build more nuclear weapons. Let's give them time to build decoys for missiles. Let's give them time to let the next generation into military service. And let us finally watch the beast we have allow to grow and feed bite our hand. Then let us then spend thousands of men to go in there and drag the beast off our arm. Send more to try to tame the beast and whip it into submission. Send more still to kill the beast.

You claim North Korea isn't an Iraq. And you can keep telling yourself that until you president claims it is. And by then you can realize how much it isn't an Iraq. Its Nazi-Germany with a nuclear program that is actually succeding.

LOL stupid posturing...why can't they just have a normal discussion.

Quote:

In May 1999, a North Korean military leader launched talks in Pyongyang by verbally attacking former Defense Secretary William Perry, first by calling him the enemy and then threatening to attack the California city where Perry lives, said Sherman, who was there.

The North Korean said if the United States didn't agree with North Korean demands, "he would bring a sea of fire to Palo Alto, Calif.," said Sherman.
wtf?

Quote:

"The North Koreans came in and cut the legs of the chairs down so that they would be taller than their (American) counterparts,"
LOL!

a senior U.S. official said North Korea claimed to possess nuclear weapons and threatened test, export or use them unless the United States agreed to direct talks.

Threatened? What kind of assholes threaten to use nukes...are they insane?

Quote:

Washington Post, in its Thursday editions, quoted a U.S. official as saying that North Korea’s Li had pulled Kelly aside and said, in effect:
“We’ve got nukes. We can’t dismantle them. It’s up to you whether we do a physical demonstration or transfer them.”

Damn they got balls the size of melons!

I'm not saying it's North Korea is fine...I'm saying something should have been done before we worried too much about Iraq...because Iraq might have seen what we did to North Korea and then backed down...but why would North Korea back down if they have nuclear weapons? I was expecting this to happen...as I think alot of people were. Too late now though...doesn't matter what should have happened...

North Korea gets almost 70% of it's food from the U.S. and another 20% from it's neighbor China. If there were internation sanctions like the U.S. is proposing to the U.N. Then the problem would be solved rather quickly. North Korea would have to choose between starving to death and keeping their weapons or disarming and having food.

It was never said that they had nukes, it was said that they had some sort of WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction), and that nukes were part of that list.
