They're targeting netbooks. I don't know how screwed Microsoft is.

At first it says. Microsoft isn't screwed by any means but a heavy weight like google will cerently force microsoft to step it up. Microsoft aboslutly needs some good solid ass kickin compitition in the industry.

If Google releases this project and performance is savvy, then Microsoft will finally get a clue about bloated performance in the current Windows releases.

Microsoft screwed? What'chu talkin' 'bout Willis? I doubt MS is going to sit idly by while this OS comes out. Plus, Windows 7 has got people talking, and has been well advertised, and publicized, so I think it'll be Google who'll be having the hard time here for one key reason...
Linux.
It may be great for those of you who know how to use computers, but for everyone else, it'll be way too unfamiliar, and a lot of people don't like extra complications on a device they're already scared of. Most people are still terrified to change their RAM for Chrissake, and they're going to adopt a new OS just on the premise that it's made by Google? If Linux marketshare on netbooks is a sign, Google OS may be a novelty at first, but I think it will tank.
Plus, for what it's worth, Google's track record isn't so awesome, what with their YouTube acquisition, 'Lively,' 'Google Shared Stuff,' among others. Also, I wonder if Google will use its ad service within the browser, or have it turned on by default; I wouldn't put it past them, especially with some of the weird stuff they did with Chrome.

Just after Chrome debuted, people discovered a section in the EULA which worried a lot of people concerned with their privacy; essentially, it read like Google would store the history for its own use, and potentially send it to third parties. It was removed, and Google did it pretty quickly, and was probably pretty sheepish about it too.
There's also a unique 'ID' assigned to each version of Chrome, which is able to associate Chrome to your Google account, but that aspect troubles me, because it also reflects on Google's seemingly ravenous desire to get as much info on your searches as possible.

Tinfoil hat, much? iTune's EULA asks users not to use the software to make nuclear missles or chemical/biological weapons.

I doubt iTunes would be useful for missile guidance. It's used for a lot worse anyways, like allowing people to download Avril Lavigne.
However, a process running in the background of a Google OS could present privacy concerns. But that's not so much my main argument, as it's just that it'll run on Linux, which is a huge impediment in and of itself.
Edit: Tin foil hat? Dude, since when did you become Captain Corporation and defend corporate intrusions into our private lives? That's my job! You sure you're reading Marx?

It's not so much corporate intrusions as anybody's intrusions. I think people are a bit too defensive of their privacy. Nobody cares that you're watching porn or whatever. I believe these same privacy concerns are just another symptom of unwarranted self importance, something very un-Marxlike.

When you pump millions of pounds into a linux distro, not much is expected to go wrong. Don't forget the PS3 runs on a linux distro.
|
I'm not saying Linux is bad. What I am saying is that it's unaccessible to many people, and that presents a problem. For example, does iTunes install itself on Linux as easily as it would for Windows? Plenty of people use the program. Sure you can use Wine, but that already requires a decent amount of knowledge that a lot of the population doesn't have, nor does it want to know. A lot of components people possess require Windows, and although it's possible to find drivers that may allow Linux to accommodate them, the lay-person would rather just use Microsoft instead of hassling themselves with all that extra work.

This is meant for a netbook, though. Everything you need comes with it. No installing or configuring needed. Also installing stuff on most linux distos is quite easy these days. You can open up a "program manager" and with the click of a button have it download, install and congiure a specific program. Not hard, but most people see it slightly diffrent to windows and say it is.

I hope it turns out to be something good. Sadly, there are few power houses out there that can really throw punches with microsoft. Sure I have my doubts but I can hope. At least we know microsoft can't buy them out to make it go away for once.
