Alright.
So i just bought a new 22inch samsung t220. Looks awesome, great design, everything positive. My "old" one was a 19inch, no problems. Native resolution of 1280x1024.
I have an ati radeon x1300 256mb pci-e video card.
This card has dvi, vga, and s-video outputs on it.
The native resolution for the new monitor is 1680x1050 ( Which is what i want to run it at )
The monitor has dvi, and vga inputs
If i use a DVI connection (preffered due to physical setup) and try to run it at the native resolution of 1680x1050, i get a lot of flickers and mostly complete blackouts. Randomly, and time intervals ranging fro a 3 second blackout to a whole 10 seconds.
If i lower the resolution to something like 1280x1024, it runs great ( looks like shit mind you )
If i use my vga connection at 1680x1050, the monitor runs great. No problems.
Ive tried multiple dvi cables. I don't have access to another PC with dvi. Ati drivers/catalyst has been fully updated.
I would preffer to use dvi for my monitor, as i was using my vga for my tv.
Possible problems narrowed down to:
1) Glitch/Problem with the monitor in dvi mode
2) Video card can't support that resolution output through dvi
Options i have are:
1) Return the monitor and try and swap to get a different one
2) Use vga for my monitor, and get a dvi-to-vga output for my tv ( or use my laptop )
3) Return the monitor and get my money back and go back to my current setup
== Also I plan on building a new, much more powerful desktop a few months from now, so purchasing a new card/system isn't an option.
Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated.
I bought the monitor today ( on boxing day ) and most likely can't return or swap for another day or two. I have 30days to get my money back if necessary.

Just want to congrat you on the awesome monitor choice. I was looking on Amazon at that very same monitor. Although I was looking at the HD version because it has a built in tuner, nevertheless its the same monitor. As to your problem;
You will probably find that its the driver support for the ATi card. If it was a dodgy monitor the DVI wouldn't be working at all. The X1300 is a pretty old (oldish) card and they (ATi) have probably dropped support for it.
Try using a 3rd party driver thats been updated after the official version you have now.

Hm thats interesting idea by swapping the vga/dvi while running.
Also does anyone have any insight to the kind of requirements/card needed in order to run windows xp at 1680x1050 ?

You don't have any buddies that have pc's with dvi output? You live on a college campus it can't be that hard to find some one. If I were you I would find someone and test that first. If you get the same results you know it is a defective monitor. If you don't than you know the issue is on your end.

I'm actually not on campus My friends who would actually have a good or newer video card ( mostly all from school ) live across the city and would almost be less of a hassle to swap for another one then to visit a friend

I actually have the same monitor (and also the T220HD next to it as a dual TV / Monitor) and it works fine with DVI in 1680x1050 at 60hz. I didn't need to install any custom drivers or anything, the native Vista drivers worked fine (although Windows Update did grab the proper ones a few hours later).
I am using a nVidia GeForce 9600GT, running both the T220 and T220HD in 1680x1050 @ 60hz with no problems whatsoever. Have you tried updating your ATI drivers, and maybe checking the card specifications to see what is the maximum resolution it can support in DVI mode? Heck, I have not used ATI cards in a while, but maybe you have to enable the DVI port somehow in the configuration settings in the driver? (Yes, that would seem rather a dumb thing to do considering you need to have a monitor working to do that, but when computers tell you to press any key when no keyboard is found you realise how dumb they can be!)
Caveman, the T220HD is excellent as a TV and as a monitor, the sound is decent (for built in speakers) and it is easy to setup. One point worth bearing in mind is that if you plan on having a dual monitor setup with a T220 and T220HD side by side like I have is that the T220HD is actually a touch lower on the stand than the T220, so they don't line up perfectly, but otherwise they go together really well.

According to the radeon specifications it is suppose to handle 2000x resolution. Does this mean either vga or dvi? i dont know ive tried to find out but haven't been able to. my video drivers + catalyst software is fully updated. The radeon x1300 was already aged when i bought it ( 3 years ago ) so compared to a 9600 gt... well i think you get the idea
My dvi works fine, i was using dvi on my old monitor at 1280x1024. The dvi also works fine on this new monitor, but on 1280x1024 but not 1680x1050.
Also to the question about why use dvi if vga is working :
1) I would like to buy a product and know that all aspects of it work like its suppose to
2) My PC is in my bedroom. My original setup was DVI to my monitor, VGA to my lcd tv. This meant i could "Dual screen/Extended desktop" onto my tv and use it to output videos such as movies etc, or when i really felt like it games even. It was quick ,looks good, and i have more then enough VGA cabling to do it. Also my tv doesnt have DVI. So now when i wish to use my tv i need to lower my resolution, unplug my monitor and plug my tv into the vga. Its not difficult but a pain in the ass. However i might look into buying a dvi to vga adapter and see if it would work on my tv until i build a new system.
Soo yeah .. either way monitor will be swapped later this week hopefully and i'll have my final conclusion on this issue.

There's a, very slight, loss of quality. Infact, given the quality of his hardware, and probable quality of cabling, he wouldn't notice, but using digital monitors on VGA inputs can worsen the quality, it's to do with the digital --> analogue conversion, so the signal is in a format the cable can carry, but when the signal gets to the monitor, it requires a digital signal, so it does analogue --> digital conversion. This latter conversion can produce errors, which would manifest as artifacts. It probably wouldn't happen, but DVI is the better interface for digital monitors, that's why it exists.

Yup. And personally I do see no difference in quality... im sure some people do, but IDK maybe i dont bother to pay enough detail into things like that. The real issue for me is the lack of use on my VGA for secondary displays And also like i said, if I buy a product want to make sure all aspects of it work so in the future its there if i need it. If the monitor is defective, and i go build a new desktop in a few months ( most new video cards are dvi only, are they not? )and i find out the monitor doesn't work im screwed. Only a few more days till I can swap it
