A) If the data is not important proceed.
B) chkdsk /r x: (where x is your drive letter)
C) Try a regular format.
D) Low-Level Format (if you have no clue what or how, don't do this one)
From the sounds of it, 'chkdsk /r' and low-level format would be my options... (considering it's not important data on it)

Old or new it doesn't matter a HDD can always fail.
Reminds me I have to resetup my DFS root...
I am not failproof now either
Since I decided to skipp on the Raid1 setup that I had .. I hope that it will last till I get holiday so I can reorganize & reinstall..

You better stick with what you got. A USB will not connect a Sata hard drive to the Motherboard. If you motherboard is fairly old and only accept IDE connections then you will need an IDE hard drive.

"scandisk" used to do this in MS Dos, I'm sure Microsoft added a variant in Windows.

You need to absolutely backup your data and stop using that thing before you loose everything that's on it.
