when i use the chat button how come i can't see what i typed in during game play in multi player?
does the chat button work at all?

The chat button works perfectly fine.
I know of a clan member who had the exact same problem as you did. He could see radio commands but no f2 or f3 - chat. Installing core patch 2 solved the problem for him!
Try reinstalling by this guide
