Viva la Resistance!
it dosnt happen on the hour does it?

it happens to me.

IIRC, it is because the DB is being backed up, so temp. shuts down the forum.

its only for a minute or two at the most.

This is a signature. Reading this is wasting your time.

I think we all get this from time to time. Sometimes RenForums has been down for a good few hours for me. (Don't know if it was being updated but meh.)

There is lag every two hours, on the hour, for database backups. If there is any way to make it faster, I would do it... but it's a necessary evil because we have people who will take any opportunity to fuck everything up for us.

I just ran an "Optimize" operation on the tables for the forum... with any luck that could speed things up.

I'm the bawss.

Along with that being said, there is another thing called "server load".

I wonder if it's possible to modify the backup scripts to to incremental backups rather than complete backups? Say only backup items new than 3 hours? That would certainly speed up the backup process, and perhaps complete backups could be done once a week, or perhaps once a day.

As the date and time of a post is stored, I guess it wouldn't be all that difficult. You just need to figure out which info you need, then link everything together with the id's (like the forum does) for every post made after the last backup.

Should be a PHP-script that's fairly simple to make considering you study the FUD database a bit. Heck, my news script for Rencommunity could prolly help you out a bit as well Smile.

Tried defraging the hard drive(s) to speed the process up?

It's no problem, none at all, i'm just conserned, it's been hapenning for a while. We'll just have to get used to it. Satisfied

From the mysqldump documentation;

Quote:

--where='where_condition', -w 'where_condition'

Dump only rows selected by the given WHERE condition. Quotes around the condition are mandatory if it contains spaces or other characters that are special to your command interpreter.

Examples:

--where="user='jimf'"
-w"userid>1"
-w"userid<1"

You could use this to specify a timestamp to only backup posts which came after that time. Obviously some tables do not store their creating time, but it would still allow you to filter the largest tables, namely posts and topics.

Anyway, it's not that big a problem imo, it's just annoying if you happen to be trying to post at the time.
