Hey, I have a 56k modem that usualy connects at 52k or 45k but in the past week my modem has been connecting at 28k, 26k, or even 40k if im lucky. One difference i have noticed while dialing is a extra lenthining of the dialing portion of the buzzes. Any one know why or how i can fix this? Thanks.

Check your access numbers. Make sure they are counted as a local call.

my aunt has the same problem
the pc has a 56k modem but the thephone line is fucked up so she has to work with a 16-30 k conection
try to conect the pc on another line and look what for conection you have then

with those old age modems the distance you live from the exchange will effect your speed :S

I first also had this problem. I was still paying for a dial-up connection to a company called compuserve (compuserve = AOL I'm afraid) and had 36K connection. At one point I tryed out a diffrent provider wich was free. Not only did I not have to pay after that moment, I also had a 56k connection, and better service.

Size doesn't matter.

Go get Spybot S&D and AD-Ware 6.0. (Search on google) Update them both , then scan your comp and remove anything they find. If you have browser windows that shoulnt appear or browser tool bars at the top that should be there go get CWShredder and hi-jackthis ( Again Search on google) and scan with those. If you dont know what your doing.. Go ahead and go here and read.

Thast should fix all speed problems. As long as you maitains it and scan often you should have a good 56k connection. My 56k hits 120-170 ping while playing renegade. I also have cable though so if that doesnt work... get cable. Surprised

Dont have pc-cillin. Im still dialing up 24k now even thou i downloaded ad aware. Every time i dial up i hear the folowing tones: nananana.BuzzzzZ nanananana. BuzzzzzZ ect.... The buzzes didnt happend when i used to dial at 52k. Any one got an idea?

This might seem like a dumb thing, but have you tried disconnecting right after connecting and trying again? Also, I'd check your modem properties in start > settings > dial-up networking > properties of your modem. Have a look around, there is an option somewhere to set the maximum speed of your modem. Something (or someone) could have changed that setting.

If this fails, I'd give your ISP a call.

I've done that re-try thing for about a week now with the same results but im getting the lower 24k or 26k more that the 40k. I checked out the properties and changed the speed on several ocasians but the same thing occurs, i also tried updating the driver (no updates). And about calling an ISP... well.... i have this pirated version of MSN that give me free internet...
So its really imposible for me to really call. Im really screwed on the speed for now.

You don't need to be a customer or anything, just call microsoft services (I think?) and say you are having trouble connecting at the proper speed. It could just be a simple thing you need to change or worse, a network problem. Do you remember the last time it worked fine; and if so, what happened since then? You don't have to answer that, just try to rack your brain & remember.

Ok, It stoped working soon after i 'belived' I removed the blaster virus from my computer (could have been and other virus) soon after i compleatly deleted my harddrive and installed a new operating system. XP Pro Edition. I don think it could be the virus or a new one dude to me getting nortin anti virus and fire wall right after installing pro. Im really stumped on this one. Also if posible could any one find me a new driver for my modem. It could help who knows.. it is a Conexant-Ambit Softk56 data,fax ich modem, curently using driver version 3.5.42.0 dated at 12/6/2001 provider being CNXT. Thanks in advance.

I believe that your parents do not want to buy a cable connection because of the huge price interferences in the United-States, in Canada prices are stabilized by mostly the law, it's much easier to get a fast connection here too, but that depends IF the provider covers your area.

Pricing for dial-up and cable is almost the same, most of the time it's only different by a few cents, or a maximum of CND$10

Anyway, that's what I think.

I suck cock and love it... absolutely love it. And I just got banned for being too immature to be allowed to post here.

Ok, this might sound weird but, I dialed up a 44k today right after i reboted after reinstalled Yuri's Rev. I also had my head phones pulged into the computer. Strange Eh? I just check out the price for a cable modem for me and it is 42$ a month.
