The entire system of how a car works should be tossed. We need to step into the future. Almost all new cars now have GPS systems in them.
They know what street they are on and can find the best way to get from place to place.
-All roads need to have magnetic grips on them. Cars travel on these grips which eliminate cars driving off road and into trees and such. Through this magnetic interaction, information and data should be transfered back and forth and allow cars to find the best route, and least crowded route to get to a destination ON ITS OWN.
-Steering wheels should be replaced with something similar to what aircraft use to steer. They should only be used for manual drive. Most of the time however, cars will be automatically driven.
-Since they would all be bound to set tracks, car accidents will happen little to never, and such traffic will never be a problem. Also speed, it will be much faster because people don't need to worry about going too fast and hitting another car, as it is all averaged out.
-Police will be able to shut down or control cars their are pursuing from a distance.
-All intersections and road crossings should be avoided by a simple underground pass. Sidewalks keep going forward, as roads drive underneath them. Same with intersections. One road is level, while the other either goes above or below the other. (With side ramps to merge them together)
-Also with the magnetic pull of the tracks, gas wouldn't be required (Not a lot anyway) because cars would be pulled magnetically to their destinations.

Err...who will pay for these magnetic strips which carry data? The politicians make a lot of fuss over building one puny little bridge in Alaska...no way this will ever happen.

k I always hear the same rhetoric from people. cars are completely different from guns. guns are designed to kill, cars are intended for transportation.

Legal intentions of a gun are for food and defense. They're not meant for offense (murder and such). Therefore, the gun and automobile comparison is pretty damn accurate.

it's not something that is designed to be lethal to another living creature human or not. The two can somewhat be compared but it's not a comparison that I see as worth much of anything.

Neither are knives, but if you stab someone with one just right, I bet you could kill them. Bottom line: People kill People. I'm going to bring up an ongoing theme in these forums: Personal Responsibility - Stop blaming guns for the crimes people commit with them.

I would of course be one of the first to pirate this "magnetic strip" that followed Americas freeways. Its not at all likely that a bunch of hill billy children would take an axe to it because pa' said people sherd' drive like i' and my grand pappy' have since dickity two.
Any system that relies on a constant source of external data is destined to fail (Kinda like this internet mumbo jumbo they say they want to make). Any autopilot system will have to be self contained so one failure will cause one problem. Also this system cost the state a GRAND TOTAL OF $0.
The biggest problem isn't technology, its the kahunays. There isn't a car company out there that would put out a full auto pilot system because they would be taken for every dime they have. You can have someone sign a million and one papers on a car purchase but they would still be screwed from all the people out for some mula.
Self contained auto pilots are do-able but really to make it worth anything every car on the road would need to have a transmitter/receiver and some new technology to back it up so pirates don't pull a bluetooth. This will allow the vehicles to be self aware as well as give advanced notice of acceleration/deceleration before the sensors pick it up.
In the future they started with simple "auto drives" that are called FreePilot and it was used for Highways and Interstates because of the easy navigation. It wouldn't allow "roaming" but would use the a pre-planned point a to point b system and would give audio alarms every 5 minutes. If the driver didn't hit the on dash button then the car would immediately find a safe place to pull over.
People still want domestic auto drives but it will require a national overhaul, after the USA was finally converted to the metric system taxes were monstrous and the people want their cake but don't want to pay for it.

Forgot to mention that the first car to feature the FreePilot was the NoTech - Envision.

No, that isn't what I meant. The grips on the roads wouldn't technically advanced at all, other than being able to allow a car to freely switch or change lanes when needed.
The driving computations would all be held in the car itself. What I meant by data was simple signals that tell it "Ok, let this lose and allow it to move left" ect.
The magnets pulling on it is much like costing in a car today. Costing is a way to conserver gas mileage and put money in your wallet. The car is moving from the momentum it already obtained from accelerating before.
Also, the auto drive system I mentioned was as a backup. Something as a precaution. You have all heard the news over the years, truckers and such falling asleep at the wheel...

Just not plausible and really inst well thought out. Have you ever driven across Texas? It's 10 hours at 60mph....That a hell of a lot of metal and maintenance.
Everything will be recorded by simple triangulation using sensors and good old fashion simplification.
