If you happen to be going to College you get a $100 dollar discount, a free 4GB Nano and a free $100 printer.

So much for that Dell value, eh?

Things will likely change tomorrow, product updates coming our way around 2PM EST (no, this is not a rumor, there will be a press event).

I've had bad experiences with HP; I had more problems with the HP tower I owned than with every computer before or since- and that's saying quite a bit. My last Gateway comp wasn't anything to write home about either, but it at least got messed up because it was (sadly) used to browse the internet before Firefox and Opera were good, free alternative browsers. I can say that Gateway has, in the past, made some very good systems; I still own a Gateway 2000 tower from ~1995ish and it is in perfect running order. I do not know what sort of product they're putting out now. As opposed to both of the above, however, I have never had a bad Dell. Hell, the first problem I ever had with a Dell was when the monitor on my lappy started wonking on me, and even that could be chalked up to wear and tear. My family owns 5 Dells right now, and they all run well.

On the other hand, I have a friend who owns a bloody dinosaur of a black+white Mac that's only a few years younger than I am. I don't know anyone who's had a bad Mac experience, only people who never could be arsed to learn and figure out the differences between Windows and MacOS. If you get AppleCare with the system, they'll in most cases replace any part that goes bad free of charge. Apple replaced the battery on my roommate's laptop (this was before he got his MacBook, mind you) without charging him so much as shipping and handling, and that battery wasn't even defective- just old.

Just in case you hadn't figured it out on your own, never buy any computer from a mass distributor like CompUSA. The systems tend to be handled roughly and may not match the specs printed on their own boxes. Always either order online or from a store that doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator. If the store thinks it can screw you, it will.

Free 24 hour shipping for the MacBook. Smile

Then I get a $100 off, a free 4Gb iPod Nano (or perhaps I should fork out $50 and get a 30Gb iPod), and $100 off a printer.

I'm not going to be able to deal with the MacBook only having one click button. Eh, I thought there were two sides to it. That and now that I think of it, I'll be doing a lot of AutoCAD work; I need better graphic capabilities. Perhaps I should even go for a bigger screen.

I'm going to do more searching before I decide on the Latitude D630 with upgraded graphics (128MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 135M).

I applied for a $2,000 loan, some of which I'll need for bus transportation, school supplies like a backpack, and possibly books. I'll appropriate about $1,000 for a laptop. If you have any suggestions, speak!

That is an awful small loan for a student. From what you've described about your situation before you should be able to get a rather sizable government grant that doesn't require payback till after you are out of college.

No tuition, and probably about $1,500 in grant money this year. Smile The loan is something I don't need.

The standard MacBooks are shite. I saved up for a 2nd generation 15.4" MBP and a week later they upgraded it with 8600 and more ram standard and upto 4gb upgrade (up from 3) a week after i bought it. I was so gutted. It was an extra £50 from the £1054 that i payed for it ($100/$2108 approx for you americans).

Most Mac trackpads, even though they have one mouse button you can set it so if you tap two fingers on your trackpad it acts as right click. Also if you rest one finger and move the other it acts as 360 degree scroll. Ever since i found this out it's been a life saver, until i bought a logitech for gaming (yes, i play most source games on my mac nativley on the os).

There are an abundance of apps out there that replicate the core of windows, trick windows apps to think they're running on windows or emulate the windows OS over the current one.

Going for a Mac is a good move, depending on what subject you're going into, even if my one was a load of shite. (i won't to into detail, lets just say they took ages to replace a screen. Want full details pm me.)

The people I know who have macs love them.

Personally I can't stand them, but that's mostly because I haven't made the effort to change. I made the effort with Linux, partly because I had to, but mainly because it doesn't cost me more, Apple hardware does.

The thing that bothers me the most about Macs are the elitist that own them. I'll admit that they are a good solid computer, but their product panders to the highest level of snobs and douchebags. Not only that but they charge far to much for the actual components in the systems.

I don't know about you, but I was pretty happy with the price of my Core 2 Extreme 24" iMac.
