DrasticDR | AMD Athlon 2700XP = 2.17Ghz
|
Yes but the 2700 meants it's the equivilent of a Pentium 2.7ghz.
|
No, not really...
a 2700+ means that it is the equivalent of a AMD ThunderBird processor running at 2.7ghz. Technically.
As for an answer to the original post, seeing as how you already have a P4, I would stick with that platform unless you have a Socket 423 chip. If you have a 478 Socket, why are you running some old 400mhz fsb chip? It would be much cheaper for you to purchase a newer P4 and drop it in.
Going AMD route:
nice fairly new board - 100
XP 2500+ Barton (333) - 90
Sticking with Intel on a 478 board:
P4 2.6 (533) - 190
So, you would come out the same with less hassle and a faster processor. Now, if you have one of the older 423 P4 boards, the AMD solution would be better.

Before you start calling someone a dumbass, maybe you should do a little research.
Clock speed is not the end all be all of a processor. Since a Athlon can do more in one clock cycle than a P4, AMD can stay competitive with Intel with a lower clock speed. Heck, even the new A64's that get released this month with come out with a PR rating of 3400+ and only run at 1.8ghz, and early benches show it blowing away a P4 3.2.
Even intel suffers from this problem. The Pentium 3 did more work per clock than a P4 does, and thats why Intel can release really low power, low speed mobile chips (Pentium-M or 'Centrino') that are competitive. A Pentium-M 1.6 is on par with a P4 2.2.
While an explanation of exactly how processors work is beyond the scope of a small forum post, and to tell the truth, its not something even I understand fully, perhaps you should learn a little more about computer hardware before you post such a stupid comment.
kthx

Well I use AMD because there cheap. I mean a AMD XP 2000 for £50 compared to a P4 2Ghz for £150 is some difference. However in terms of the AMD XP 3000+ vs the P4 3.06Ghz the gap is getting a little bigger as it just isn't as fast as the P4 when coming to Video editing and CPU intensive applications. However the performance in game are similar in the two processors.

Infinint | AMD is great for gameing and 3d stuff but AMD chips arnt for intel mother boreds also a faster prossesor isent going to rise your bus speed
|
*sigh* Why do you people subject me to such little computer knowledge.
If it's a socket 478 board, I don't know of a damn one that only does 100mhz FSB. Not to say there is one, but it would be very rare. Almost every single one does 133 FSB. So yes, a new processor WILL increase the bus speed, since the board would detect the new chip and set itself accordingly.
Have you ever built a computer?
