Overclocking Celeron Dual core [message #387322]

So anyway I can overclock my e1400 Celeron dual core to 3.0 GhZ but I can get it to 3.2 GhZ but I have to increase the power to like .40 V for just that jump from 3.0 to 3.2 . Where the jump from 2.0 to 3.0 was only like .20 V.

So why was there this big diffrence in Volts, how hot will it get (can I use the retail heatsink), and how long will it last. All of that running at 3.2 GhZ.

Cause right now my CPU is running at 2.5 GhZ and I got in FPS jump in ren from 40 - 85. So I guess a 3.2 GhZ fps jump would go all the way up to 120? I say that because my laptop which has a 2.0 GhZ Core 2 Duo only gets 60 FPS max, usally around 30 - 40 FPS ingame.

I suppose you can imagine it like a car engine and speed. You don't need much torque to jump from 10mph to 20mph, but from 100mph to 110mph you need a whole lot more.

and there is a bunch of reasons why overclocking is a bad idea, if you don't know what you're doing then you will end up with a fried processor.

Well, I tried to get it over 3.2 but my computer whould not turn on and I had to reset the comp via CMOS reset jumper.

You can over clock the piss out of those celerons. If you put an aftermarket heat sink on you can do even more.

If you have a computer that has a dual 2.5 celeron I'm going to guess it doesn't have the highest quality power supply either. You may be getting some voltage drops which could be causing the issues.

That isn't true at all. You can safely and properly overclock your stuff. You just have to take 30 seconds to google <insert part ot be over clocked here> so you do it correctly. If using google is to much to ask for then use your brain when you do it. Some parts (like celerons) are more over clock friendly than others. Sure you may decrease the life span a little but lets face it - no ones uses computer parts till they die anyways. The basic principle is really simple; voltage in = more cycles = more heat. If you can supply the voltage then you need to control the heat. You do that and you are good to go. I've run my q6600 (quad 2.4) at 3.0, 24/7, after market heat sink/fan since the day I got it. July will be two years and it runs like new.

I do, but normally motherboards and hard drives die first (at least, that's how we lost two PCs)

I have a 300 W power supply which is small. <.< I will need it buy I was thinking of getting a nVidia 8500 GTS PCI 512 MB graphics card and overclocking my e1400 cerlron CPU to something like 3.5 and even 4.0 if it can go that high.

Now that I have overclocked the CPU to 3.0 I get a constant 85 FPS, never drops below.

I suppose that if u overclock too much, you'll get the oposite effect because another hardware part will become your bottleneck (other than cpu)?
