Firstly, if this is in the wrong place, move it. Thanks.

Right, i got myself a MacBook Pro for my graphics course that i'm starting in September and i was wondering if i could get 3DS Max working on it.

I've tried Crossover Mac which is a wine type application and does support 3d applications, however the installer prematurely closes after installing dx9.0c (from the installer).

I haven't tried parallels desktop although even if it did install it wouldn't display any 3d images since it doesn't support 3d.

Does anyone here know of a way to get Max working on the unix kernel through a wine type application or emulator? I'd prefer it if Max 8+ worked and that i didn't have to reboot into windows through boot camp.

EEEK! A MAC *runs* Stay away! PC gamers ftw! ftw!!!

yes it can run, i'm not sure if theres a pluggin or what, but you can try parralels for mac's, you can install windows applications like games or windows only programs on a mac, even Direct x 9 and 10 work on it, I'd say it's stupid running windows on a mac cause then whats the point, but if you need to run it on a mac for a class, buy or try parralls (I cant spell) on your mac...you may need to install windows on it too, since parralells is basically a program where you install windows and can run windows after you boot up mac osx, or if you boot osx you can run windows files on your mac.....I think i died a little inside helping a mac user...i used to be a mac fan too...then PC games came out and never came out for macs so then i got a pc to play games...then noticed really everything thats on a mac, is on the PC too.....photoshop, firefox, media players...I just like windows for the quick and easy start button Razz

Don't be afraid of the mac, i don't see what the big fuss is? I can play most of the games that i play (ren, apb, steam and source games) on the mac fine using Crossover.

As i said above Parallels Desktop for Mac doesn't support direct 3D nor any other type of 3D system.

I wish I could help you... but I just want to say Good Choice on upgrading to a MacBook Pro. Razz I have been using one for about a year now and I love it. My work bought it for me... which means it's not really mine, but I have permission to use it for personal stuff... my boss got us all beefed up with the 2.16 gHz Core Duo, 2 gigs of RAM, and 100gig hard drive, which at the time retailed for $3500. I haven't used any of the Windows-running utilities except Boot Camp which works fantastically well for me.

I'm the bawss.

I got the lowest 15.4" Mac and i must admit, it is fan-bloody-tastic. It's got a bigger hard drive than yours, the clock speed is the same but i have 1gb of ram and i can say, i'm glad i got one. I got mine for just over £1000 ($2000) with educational discounts and no VAT (school payed VAT).

Tell me Mac haters, why do you dislike them so much? And don't say because you can't play games on them because they can, sometimes better than windows can.

I've had every one of those problems and ten times the number of different ones on this Windows based PC, so I remain unconvinced.

As a side note, the only reason that Macs can't run games is because Microsoft are too greedy and monopolistic.

I don't dislike macs so much as the fanboys that use them. I respect macs but I just can't use the things and I can't be bothered learning because PCs cheaper.

Now, to your problem. I think bootcamp is probably the only option if parallels doesn't work, or VMWare inside your OSX running your favourite flavour of Windows.

For the record every OS has flaws, which one is better depends on the user preference and the tasks you want to complete.

heh, looks like you may be in luck:
Quote:

"For some time Mac users have been waiting to see who would bring 3D graphics to a Windows emulation/virtualization solution under OS X. It looks like Parallels is going to be the winner. They have announced an RC of Parallels 3.0, with the final to be available 'in a few weeks.' For anyone else tired of Bootcamp or rebooting to play a Windows game, it look like the solution is finally here; I'm not counting out VMWare entirely. Obviously it will depend on how soon they can catch up, but there is some serious first-mover advantage here for Parallels."

That was funny. Also notice that you saw the old 500Mhz G4 tower and the 300Mhz iMac G3 bubble pieces of crap. That was a good 5-6 years ago and was most likely running OS 9.x. OS 10.x is alot more stable and uses its resources alot better too. I bet you can't say that about vista.

I got the mac just because it works, it just works. With windows, sure it's easier to upgrade but then you need to install drivers that are out of date and you get viruses on the minute and more problems of the like.

I've had this MacBook running non-stop for about a week now and from the first time when i started it up to today it's running as smoothly as a week ago. The only thing i dislike about the MacBook is physical stuff, like the hinge for the screen doesn't go as far back as you want it. It's made out of metal so when you put your hands on it it's hot to the touch. The trackpad is too big and the button sticks out too much. It's also too sensitive to "tap-clicking". Everything else i just love about it.

About 3-4 days ago i was having regrets about buying this but once you start using them they're just great.

PS. I don't like the smell of them when you open them. It leaves an after taste which isn't nice (i was physically ill after opening and setting up the schools G5 and two Apple Displays).

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

Of course, they do need to figure out how to stick another button on their mouse. Or have they already? I digress...

Yeah, i tried that but since the mouse is at another level (not at lap level) it's uncomfortable to use outside of gaming.

Apple's Mighty Mouse, even though it's one piece of plastic there are two buttons under there, which work on windows OS.

I've got my trackpad set to when you tap it with two fingers it acts as secondary click, which saves me reaching for ctrl all the time.

It doesn't "just work," the only reasons you don't get viruses is because the virus making geeks don't waste their time on it. They can reach a bigger chunk of the population with Windows alone. See? Not even the creators of viruses waste their time on Macs, haha.

Anyway, if you get viruses, stop watching porn and get a girl. I don't have ad-aware, I don't have an anti-virus program, I don't have a firewall and I've never had a virus. Only idiots get viruses (i.e. the people that switched from windows to mac because they got viruses).

If it was so great Windows wouldn't have raped Apple the way it did. It's all you lefty big corporation haters that ever say crap like that. Why hate on Bill Gates and Windows for being successful? They made the better product, deal with it. Use whatever you prefer but no need to hate on Microsoft because you're too stupid to get your computer to work after sitting on it every day for 3 years.

I couldn't agree more with some of the things you said.

Mac's are for new people to computing, I don't mind the other guy on my msn list that has one, If they start bs'ing me about "It just works" I tell them to stfu because they couldn't use windows.

That's personal choice.

I do check my PC regularly, And if I'm still not sure - I go on Symantec's website and do there online virus scan.
