1. Develop opinion based on looking at it and not playing it.
2. It conflicts with beliefs or knowledge you already posses. (For example, if a Star Wars MMO came out, but it didn't feel like Star Wars, you wouldn't like it.)

No. The third option is that some of us have tried the games from that genre and realized they suck. Yeas ago, they had a Sims Online game, and I got a free trial for a week.

I tried it out, and thought it was cool for all of ten minutes before I realized that you had to spend time gaining dumb skills to advance a career and stuff... aka 'grinding' which seems to be a necessity in all these games. It's boring as hell. You have to work at making your ingame character better, and I didn't find that aspect fun at all. I got bored after about two hours.

Although perhaps me wasting all the money I had at the start on the multiple whorehouses ingame likely contributed as well.

Ditto. I've also played games like City of Heroes, which to me is a lot better than WoW, but the fact that I have to put hours into making my character decent is boring to me. Then again, I've never liked or finished any RPG in my life, and I have given that genre many chances.

I'd rather jump in an FPS or RTS once or twice a week, have a full hour or two of fun, than put up with building a character, going on raids, dying and having to walk to my body. I think more happens in one game of Renegade than one full day of WoW.

That falls under #2.

It's defying what you believe should be the way it should work.

There are only two ways to NOT like an MMORPG:

1. Develop opinion based on looking at it and not playing it.
2. It conflicts with beliefs or knowledge you already posses. (For example, if a Star Wars MMO came out, but it didn't feel like Star Wars, you wouldn't like it.)

Basically, if you play an MMORPG, you WILL like it and WILL want to play it more.

They are like drugs. Bad to use and bad to play... but addicting nonetheless.

I can think up half a dozen ways not to like an MMORPG that don't fall under those two.

Just because you're not addicted(or have a dependance, whether psychological or otherwise) to something doesn't mean it won't negatively affect your life. So be careful, your energy/time that could go towards being productive may end up being spent "being productive" in WoW.

The same can be said for any game, including Renegade (And even ones that have a much larger acceptance in the greater society like Chess). Any time not spent "being productive" (There's a subjective term if there ever was one) would be a negative affect on life by the strictest standards. I think we can agree "being productive" in WoW doesn't translate well into being productive in the "real world", but where do you draw the line? How much time is acceptable for people to spend on their own enjoyment? Labor activists used to have a slogan that went "Eight hours for work, eight hours for sleep, and eight hours for whatever we please". How much time is it necessary to spend on one's own enjoyment to keep morale up?
I'm happy this shit-tastic thread is finally turning around.

That's not really my point. I guess my point is that a game like WoW where you're constantly working towards and achieving new goals can be much easier to keep someone's attention than a game where you keep striving for the same goals(IE: Ren, FPS games), I should have said that instead of said "being productive".
I wasn't really saying that other games can't take away your productivity.

Ren's core gameplay hardly ever changes. What keeps it interesting is the constantly revolving teammates, tactics, and present skills.
And modifications, I guess.
