Your serial is not being verified by RenGuard, it just checks if it looks like a valid renegade serial. Thus, you can log into RenGuard

However, when you connect to a real renegade server, it will verify your serial, and it finds that it does not work for some reason - it may be already in use, or if you have a german 10 Euro box those serials do not work on GameSpy Arcade for some reason..
