I don't think you need to bother reformatting, the freezes and stuff are probably due to errornéous system files.
Go to start, run, type in scandisk. Run that on standard mode, should fix the freezing when going into sleep mode at least. Try scandisk in advanced mode too if you still have stuff hanging up.. and defrag your system to get the speed back. run > defrag.
If you're pulling the plug on your computer, you gotta run scandisk when you boot back up.
