splitting the image in Photoshop is pretty easy...
Step 1: make sure you image is, for testing purposes, 1024x1024 (usually best for it to be like this)
next, goto Canvas Size->
click on the upper right hand corner of the [ ] that is down below, change the size of the canvas to 512w 512h
Save As...
now hit CTRL+SHIFT+Z until your canvas grows back to 1024x1024, repeat the process for each corner.
(*note, 1024 was just a sample size, any size will do, as the texture is still mapped teh same, even 4 32x32 black squares work)
