Funnily enough, someone posted this story earlier on another forum with the same reaction as you had. Choosing not to have the operation to avoid a scar seemed stupid but it was her choice after all. Maybe if she had said she was terrified of being cut open that would have given her more of a case. I suppose it's a matter of how much you want the kid but I shudder to think of myself being cut open like that. Apart from the horror, chicks dig harry potter scars, not big slices down your chest.
