Shouldn't this be in the politics forum?

Anyway, I don't mind personal parental decisons, but I do mind when people try to force their decisions on others. People are perfectly capable of "censoring themselves," For example, I turned off gore and mature taunts on the Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo, probably bringing it down to a "Teen" rating. However, I'm not going to force that down somebody else's throat. Sure, I hate the Duke Nukem and Grand Theft Auto games, absolutely hate them, but should I rant about how there should be a law against them? Hell no.

Furthermore, ignorance is a key role in people hating video games. Many members of the press (Meaning gaming magazines, Gamespy, etc.) LOVE the Grand Theft Auto series. And, of course, like the rest of the media, if they say they like it, many, though not all, people will say, "That's a great game," all because some guy at Gamespy said so. Then parents, legistlators, and others see what the gaming media thinks and then come to the conclusion that all video games are evil and all of the players are pale, skinny, murderous maniacs. This is all because of ignorance.

Now to talk about "addiction" of video games. Look, I agree many kids DO have an addiction to video games, it's true. Playing video games 6+ hours a day is bad for you. As Scott Kurtz* explains, it's all about moderation. Don't buy a new game the day before an exam or something else that's important. You should KNOW you're going to play the night away, which that brings up another point. Make sure you have someone to make you go to bed, so you don't play until 3 AM. Yes, I've been there, and believe me, the next day isn't fun.

In conclusion, parents and other "figures of authority" should be enforcing the rules in their household instead of forcing their beliefs upon others. Be responible for you own actions, and others should do so as well.

* Scott Kurtz and Jerry of Penny-Arcade believed this was a hoax. I'd have to agree as this organization seems to have been "new" for more than year.

Note: I think this post is good enough to be posted as a rant on my site, what do you think? Wink
