You have 30 seconds to get to your tank before it unlocks. Some servers, i.e. The pits, do not allow taking of tanks by team mates even after 30 seconds if there is a valid reason for the buyer not being in the tank, i.e. saving a building.

For 30 seconds after the vehicle spawns it is safe from enemy players getting in as well. Best thing to do is get to the vehicle within the 30 seconds.
