first, mars does not have the magnetic field and gravity necessary to hold in an atmosphere. we could build shelters to hold humans but they would never be outside playing ball in the sunlight without protection.
as for the moon, there are many things a moon base could do for us including growing crops, harvesting solar energy, a place for prisoners, observatories etc.
also, keep in mind that everytime we develope technology for space travel it helps us out on earth. so by trying to walk on the moon again or sending people to mars we may just accidentally cure cancer or come up with a viable clean energy source

Are you saying it is useless to go to Mars? You are actually wrong Mars has an atmosphere just not breathable to us humans currently. You could also grow crops, harvest solar energy, hold prosoners, and make observatories on Mars as well. The moon has no atmosphere, and can never have one, due to it's small mass it doesn't have a strong enough gravitational field to hold an atmoshpere.

no, i'm not saying it's useless to go to mars...just the opposite. and yes, it has an atmosphere, but it is too thin to sustain life as we know it right now. the atmosphere has leaked out over the years because it does not have the gravitational pull to keep one in. add to that the lack of tetonic plate movement which would help keep an atmosphere in and the planet at a decent temperature. it all means that mars would never be able to sustain human life unless huge shelters were built and water and oxygen we created on a mass scale to keep those in the shelters alive.
our resources should be spent on exploring mars and other planets in our solar system but not in teraforming them. instead we should keep trying to improve our technology so we can travel to other solar systems and find planets which can already support our life.
