Military service is a good idea... if you aim to have them pay your school, or you attend an academy like West Point. The US Military has a lot of scholarships, and will assist with tuition. Even housing allowances if you attend full-time.
There are a lot of other perks. Companies often have military discounts, and quite a few young soldiers often get bonuses for signing, which they use towards purchasing a home. The military even helps facilitate very reasonable mortgages and lending.
