Just to explain this in more detail for anyone who is curious;
The Core Patch includes an older version of scripts (2.9.x as I recall) which did not support the DX9 stuff included with the 3.x series of scripts. Installing 3.4.4 and then a Core Patch (with 2.9.x scripts) over the top results in Renegade trying to use the DX9 part of scripts.dll 3.4.4 with an incompatible scripts.dll, resulting in the blank screen.
This is why the reinstalling guide for Renegade specifically instructs you to install Core Patches *before* 3.4.4.
