Have you tried talking to customer service? Or even just emailing them?

There is obviously something wrong if it heats up so much that it causes it to shut down. You shouldn't have to go out of your way to buy a cooling pad to cover for a possible malfunction or manufacturing error.

If you do talk to them, make sure you stress that it had overheating problems on your lap and on hard flat surfaces. If you don't, they will just probably say the same thing I said.
