But people still like HL not because of the story, but because the dialogue and continuous first person perspective. HL really puts the player in the shoes of the main character, which is what makes it so addictive.

Lies. It's your generic hollywood crap. Not to say it's bad or poorly done- it has its charm. But it's definitely not better than Half Life 2's almost depressing atmosphere. And hey, it doesn't have to use constant shades of gray to make a sort of "down" environment.

How can you say it's generic hollywood crap if you haven't played all the games? The Master Chief finished the fight hollywood style, but the way the story unfolds isn't generic. Half-Life is going the Matrix route, which sets it up for failure Matrix style...time will tell.
