Is it worth it ? I'd say so. Every online game I've ever played had their own issues Renegade is no different. The lag aspect of it depends on a) the server b) your connection. In most cases when ppl are lagging bad there are always ppl in the game who have no lag (once again lag = your connection sometime). Anyways, my 2cents.
edit : I also use to play Urban Terror (Quake3 Mod) and it had some really sweet (NOT) bugs like shooting blanks ! ie. point blank shotgun blast *somtimes* wouldn't do jack. So consider that when complaining about Renegade !
