I use Soccer because that's what it's called out here.

Thing I don't understand is why people, especially those in England get upset when the term 'soccer' is used, as if they're the foremost authority on what the sport should be called, and that anyone on the other side of the Atlantic is some sort of stupid prat.

We invented it. It's called football. American football is called 'American football, not 'football'. Why Americans thought they could just call it football even though that's actually a totally different game, I have no idea.
It's a bit like calling a game with only Two countries involved the 'World Series', and it's victors 'World Champions'. No one would be arrogant enough to do that... Oh, wait... Sarcasm

Now, now! You just know that some archaeologist in a remote part of China will discover that Soccer was invented sometime during the Qin Dynasty. Mr. Green

But anyhow, who cares? Why is it that people care so much about what the sport is called?

When I was in York in '04, a bud and I were eating lunch and Soccer was on the TV in the pub. I made a comment about Soccer being on the TV in the pub, and some moron nearby, completely unprovoked, goes on a tirade about it being called football, and that we 'American's' are all wrong, and that we all suck, and all that drivel. He called me the wrong thing (American), but I didn't get upset about it, nor did I even politely correct him.

Half my family is Australian. To them, 'football' is Aussie Rules, and Soccer is 'Association Football.' They call our version of football, 'gridiron' but you don't see us North Americans upset about that. Seems like it's only the English who care way too much about what soccer is called. That's been my observation.
