I think that Season 3 was the weakest overall. the first 4 or so and the last ~5 were ok, but the rest of season 3 was basically just killing time without advancing plot OR character.

The series went down after the second season. The producers lost the plot and decided to make new storylines as they went along.
The ending left behind far too many unanswered questions and incomplete sub-plots. It was a quick way out and the show could not have had another season because they managed to squeeze everything they can out of it and were basically running on fumes in the final season.
But I think it was not THAT bad of an ending. And it was a damn good show despite it's [few] shortcomings.
