Forgive me if I misunderstood your question:

Think of it like extra credit.

You don't hurt yourself or others if you don't contribute (keep in mind I'm only talking about custom free-time projects like a mod). So you can only gain if you do contribute, regardless of how crappy whatever it is you contributed. The worst thing that can happen is that they say "This isn't good" and it gets pushed aside.

However, if it is an official project, be it writing a magazine, designing a game, building a house, or whatever, if you are put on that project and you don't contribute, then you only put yourself and others in a worse situation.

So it really depends on what it is you are contributing to.
