Do the SATA or IDE cable even need to be plugged in though? I haven't tried it, but I'm pretty sure the drive only needs power to open and close. The cable is just for transmitting the data from the disk to the system or vice versa.
The paperclip idea is your best bet, but if all cables are secure, the drive or ejecting mechanism has gone bad, which means you'll need a new one.
