The thing is, it's not the first time he's come clean in public. This is at least the second time. It's like the boy who cries wolf. Nobody believes a liar, even if they are being sincere because they have lied in the past.

"I promise I'm clean. I've learned my lesson."
"I want to be a respectable member of society. I'm going to respect others and their property."

After a while... all you hear is, "Fuck being clean. I'm just going to take advantage of your altruism and then take advantage of it because I don't give a fuck about you."
