Just reinstalled Renegade after a few years of not playing and had this same problem. and my problem was that, Renegades autoupdate gave errors when installing the patch, so had to search the file and install manually.
Another problem that i've always had is that Renegade always freezes and compleatly crashes the computer when clicking on "Westwood Online" within the game the first time. Its because my firewall asks if it can connect to internet. To be able to give the permission i need to first run Renegade in windowed mode, to be able to see the message from the firewall.
