That depends on how you feel about illegally downloading and installing cracked software.
Audacity is a very user friendly, useful tool for musicians and it does a lot of what the more expensive programs do. And it's free. There are some cheaper softwares such as Goldwave and Fruityloops which range from about £20-£80
For the more mid market software, you're probably looking at software like Reason and Cubase which range from about £200-£400
As for the big dogs, well you can't go wrong with Protools or Nuendo. These range from about £800 or so to about £3000. But unless you're a serious, professional musician, you are really not going to need these.
