Resize your pictures before you upload them.
Exemple: if you leave your pic's in BMP, they can easely be 3-4 MB per piece. If you save them as jpeg by using a program like irfanview (google it!) and you make their size smaller (800*600), then that same image might only be 200 KB. If your friends have broadband, then u should be able to put around 20 of those on a page without big problems (20 * 200 KB = +/- 4 MB).
