I've had bad experiences with HP; I had more problems with the HP tower I owned than with every computer before or since- and that's saying quite a bit. My last Gateway comp wasn't anything to write home about either, but it at least got messed up because it was (sadly) used to browse the internet before Firefox and Opera were good, free alternative browsers. I can say that Gateway has, in the past, made some very good systems; I still own a Gateway 2000 tower from ~1995ish and it is in perfect running order. I do not know what sort of product they're putting out now. As opposed to both of the above, however, I have never had a bad Dell. Hell, the first problem I ever had with a Dell was when the monitor on my lappy started wonking on me, and even that could be chalked up to wear and tear. My family owns 5 Dells right now, and they all run well.

On the other hand, I have a friend who owns a bloody dinosaur of a black+white Mac that's only a few years younger than I am. I don't know anyone who's had a bad Mac experience, only people who never could be arsed to learn and figure out the differences between Windows and MacOS. If you get AppleCare with the system, they'll in most cases replace any part that goes bad free of charge. Apple replaced the battery on my roommate's laptop (this was before he got his MacBook, mind you) without charging him so much as shipping and handling, and that battery wasn't even defective- just old.

Just in case you hadn't figured it out on your own, never buy any computer from a mass distributor like CompUSA. The systems tend to be handled roughly and may not match the specs printed on their own boxes. Always either order online or from a store that doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator. If the store thinks it can screw you, it will.

Remember, kids: illiteracy is cool. If you took the time to read this, you are clearly a loser who will never get laid. You've been warned.
