My parents have been ebayers since I was really little... around the time it first came out. I've slowly learned from them throughout the years and have bought a few things on ebay myself. One other important advice is that I generally avoid things that are sold as-is, where the seller doesn't know if the item works or not. If it is a PC component, make sure it has some sort of return policy or guarantee.
