Unfortunately, costs are subjective (for the most part), and have nothing to do with the legality of the case itself... which is what the court must hear out.
That's not to say that should he win that he'll get what he asks for, but as far as the law is concerned, he was harmed by the act he claimed happened and there is a valid reason for the claim. In order for it to be heard in court, that's really all that is required.
The damages claimed, though, could cause him problems if he doesn't get a sympathetic judge. He may even be awarded less that what the defendants offered him.
However, it is America. And while I don't intend this as an insult, its legal system is known for giving substantially large awards than would be normal elsewhere.
