Ok, I have a Dlink DSl-G604T. That did just fine, until a power surge killed -one- ethernet port, leaving me with three. (need four) I want a wired network for performance, so should I get a new router, or buy a switch?

i would go for a switch. i got myself an eight port gigabit switch for example. so all our computers (most also with gigabit nic) are connected to this switch and theres only one "uplink" to the router. if you ask me i would always go for this solution either than relying on the ports of your router!
We, for example, had to change our router three times in 2 or 3 years now. first cable-router (2mbit), then an ADSL1 router (6mbit) and now a brand-new ADSL2+ router (16mbit). so a switch would obviously "last" longer. plus the cable-router only had one ethernet port, so we needed an extra switch anyways.
