I wish people would stop running around with the idea that AMD is going to completely alienate everything to do with nvidia from their products, or the other way around. Folks that's just not going to happen.

Right now, without a doubt, nvidia makes the majority of chipsets for AMD platforms. Nvidia is not going to stop producing AMD chipsets because of this merger, they'd be pulling out of a massive section of their market. I highly doubt AMD or ATI could make up for them either.

This greatly worries me. I may need to switch over to ATI. But I don't know anything about ATI cards. I'll need to bone up on my video cards.

They're not going to release drivers or updates that just cause nvidia hardware to stop working... Come on now.

The major reason behind this merger is fabs. Both companies want the ability to produce more chips and produce them faster. Currently I don't think ATI has any of their own fabs, so this merger would give them access to AMD's fabs. AMD want money to build more fabs.

NONE of these companies want to lose money, so anything dramatic happening within the next year at least is incredibly unlikely. If anything, you will just slowly start to see more coming out on the AMD+ATI side of things. As you'll get more benefits for going AMD+ATI as they come up with new technologies that work with each other. AMD+Nvidia will still work, and so will Intel+ATI. Everyone needs to stop thinking so negatively.
