If ever you cant see the player list or you cant click the start button heres the solution.

Enter the player list screen and if it shows no1 there just stay in that window until the server automatically kicks you for idling. Once you have been kicked rejoin the player list and tah dah! theres the start button!

That doesn't work. I've tried that, it doesn't always work. Hell, it hardly ever works. Usually I just get kicked for idling again.
