If you are running windows XP, and assuming you have a password set for it, you can click Start, Logoff. Your programs including AIM will remain running in the background. When you come back you can log back in and resume where you left off. If someone else needs to use the computer, they can login with their own login, and your stuff will still stay running in the background.
