I don't know why people live in a place like this; it seems like every five years or so huge tsunamis come in and wipe out a ton of people.

Honestly... are you really this completely uninformed? or is it truly retardation? On the very first day the tsunami hit, it was stated on just about every news outlet that this was a "rare occurance" in this part of the world.. Here's a quote from Reuters for you:
