To make the *.bik videos, you do need 3ds or something else to render stuff with.
As for the video on mission 1, thats done with Cinematic scripting (thats also how they did things like the bit in the ship level where havoc rescues the prisoners for example). How to do Cinematics, that I dont know tho.
