Blackhand Studios is hard at work on Core Patch 1.
Core patch 1 is going to include several new maps (as of now, they are going to be (C&C_Mutation,C&C_Siege,C&C_FieldTS,C&C_Snow,C&C_Gobi,C&C_Sand).
More maps will be added in the future.
However, some team members have suggested that we should make the map downloads optional to be more kind to dialup users.
The downside to this is that it would likely result in far less people downloading the maps (which then means server owners are less likely to run the maps and etc).
So,we want to find out what you, the Renegade Community think.
Post here in this poll if you think the maps should be optional downloads or included in core patch 1 itself.
Another thing to bear in mind is that optional downloads would require extra functionality in the downloader to let you select which, if any, to download which means the downloader thingo would take more time to code.
I personally think they should be in core patch 1 itself (some team members aggree with me, some dont). The results of this poll will determine what Blackhand Studios does on this issue.
If you say "put them into core patch 1", all maps will be downloaded as part of the core patches.
if you say "make them optional", then maps will be made optional and only fixes and such will be in the patches.

"The maps should go into core patch 1"
I'm a "56k" dialup user that usually connects @ 31.2kbps, and i believe you should put the maps as a required download to RenGuard users. These maps you suggest, in total will come to roughly 20MB, which to be honest, is no biggie for anyone (2 hours of downloading).
I've absolutely no problem with downloading 20MB every now and then for new maps, but i must insist that you make the download resumeable with plenty of mirrors.
Go for it, i wanna play some new maps with plenty of people alongside me!

All those maps together can't possibly amount to less than 20 megs...
I think it all just comes down to how much that needs to be downloaded. Like npsmith said, 20 megs seems reasonable. 30 pushes it, but I'm up for integrated maps within the patches. Best way imo to get maps to the players.
And edit: this should be on the general forum.

Rest assured that whatever download client we make will be as good as we can make it.
And we are going to be mindfull of how large the core patch ends up being, we may pull one or more of the maps if we decide its too large.
I am going to look into doing the download client myself (Slient_Kane was going to do it but he seems to have done nothing on it as yet)
The plan is this:
If you have core patches turned on, the server checks your current core patch version, if its not the latest, it sends a command (much like the renguard auto-update command) to download & run a small exe.
This small exe will check your core patch version.
If it is "no core patch", it will download an "all-in-one" patch that contains everything needed to go up to the latest.
Otherwise it will download, in order, a set of patches.
If you are at patch 3 and patch 5 is the latest, it updates from 3 to 4 then from 4 to 5.
The patches themselves will be RTPatch patches (same as what Renegade and I think RenAlert uses) amd will probobly use the same patchw32.dll file that comes with Renegade itself.
There will be (hopefully) download resume support for this to enable the download to start from where it left off if there is a network dropout or a program crash or a power falure or whatever (or even if you just want to cancel it and resume later)

Put the maps in, it would be great to see some of these maps in Rengaurd servers instead of the standard Westwood ones all the time because people dont download other maps. Although i already have all those maps others dont so include them in the update.

If the patch has a sumple GUI etc., I think the decision to download the map should be made individually.
Download the patch > it shows you there is also a map available which can be downloaded while the patch is in progress.
Once the game is patched etc., the patch will place the file in the apropriate place.
Similar to a download manager, but only used for BHS downloads/updates.

Do it.
If it becomes a disaster I can always purge, and reload.
New auto-loading maps are about the only thing that will keep a real interest in Renegade. 98 % of people don't know how to put a downloaded file into their directories, mainly because they have never done it before.
Do it.
