Hi. I have a 900Mhz comp and renegade generally runs kinda sluggish on my system. i cannot afford a new comp, so can someone tell me what buying more RAM will do? i already have 256SD RAM, we it be better if i add another 256? I know there is better DDR RAM but i cannot afford it. Also Renegade takes about 5 mins to load... will more ram speed this up?

Please can I have more information.
OS
mobo
hard drive
graphics card.

I don’t know why it would take ren five minutes to load up, I have a 500mhz, 256 ram, win98se, 12gb 5200 Maxtor, and it loads up instantly. It runs sluggish but I Shouldn’t expect much from the heap I work on. My other PC is much better.

More ram is better. 512 is a good amount to have, although you won’t need most of it. It might not even be ram you need but a new graphics card, or just new drivers or a reformat of a hard drive.

What experience do you with PC maintenance and repair? What books have you read? I can point you in the right direction, I just need more info.

I have 256MB SDRAM PC133mhz and I dont even use 1/2 of it while running Renegade. You probably want to check your hard drive data transfer rate. I have an AMD 850mhz and my general load time is about 20-30 seconds. The main bottle neck is moving the data from the HD especially if your hard drive is really fragmented. My last HD failed on me & towards the end it had data transfer rates around that of a slow CDROM drive and my game would take FOREVER to load.

Bottom line : get components that perform on the same level...
Fast RAM + Fast CPU + 5400RPM HD = bad idea
The hard drive is by farthe slowest media out of all the media's involed when playing Renegade.

Same holds true when any of those components preforms on substandard levels...

AMD T-bird 1 gig, WD 30gig ATA 100, 512MB PC133 SDRAM, Win ME.

Ren map Load time 12-24 seconds, varies by map

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton, WD 100gig, 512MB PC2700(running as 2100)DDR, Win XP

Ren map load time 5-10 seconds, varies by map

Numorous things will help how Ren runs and loads.
When I doubled the RAM on my T-bird system the game did run better and the frame rate went up because I had more system memory available to use for video.

Ya back in day of Renegade I only had 256 MB SDRAM 133 mhz. Then last christmas I got another 512 to bring my total up to 768. Now it runs alot better and even more so my system can take more programs at once which is a good thing... Very Happy

I used to have 256 SDRAM, and I boosted it up to 512 MB SDRAM and it loads great. The ingame FPS is my only problem-but its because of my graphix card-which money is the only problem at the moment.

More RAM will definatly help loading time on Renegade and other stuff too, but processor speed and graphix card upgrades work good too.

in my opinion more ram is good if the rest of the system can handle it also if you can used DDR not SDR.

I got a AMD Athlon 1800+ XP (overcloaked to 1.8Ghz Razz) with 256DDR PC2100 and it takes me about 10-15 seconds to load (depending on Map and/or Server).

My old PC i had something like 380SDRam PC133 and it loaded it in a matter of seconds with 566MHz P3 Celeron.

Ram should speed it up so, Smile

Im on a AMD XP 2000, 512 DDR and maps load between instantaise - 5 seconds. Very Happy

In the end it doesn't matter if you are who you say you are. You will still mean nothing to me.

When i have kids, everytime i drive past a fast food restaurant, im gonna punch my kid in the face, then they'll never wanna come..

The amount of Ram is enough I think,
better spend your money on a faster HD, because the Speed of a HD affect the laodtime of the Maps.
If you are on a Raid system, it will take a LOOOOOONG time, I dunno why. then Install Renegade on a HD that is not in a Raidsystem.

256 Mb SDRAM should be very cheap (€30 or so?), so I say just try it Smile

For Renegade loading slowly, you might want to defragment your HD.
For Renegade playing sluggish, what graphics card do you have?
