...get the good old "unauthorized game2.exe file found on your system" message, even after I know I got the right one. Any ideas?

I get the same error, I tried finding djlaptop's no-cd patch however to no avail.
I suffered a similar problem with another game a few months ago. The problem I believe is that when you run the game (in this case Game2.exe) the file size changes by about 35kb causing a difference between your Game2.exe and the master servers acceptable Game2.exe.
A temporary solution is that each time before you run RenGuard place a fresh Game2.exe (unzip Game.exe from zip to another directory and rename it then move/copy it in), this is what I do and it works fine after replacing Game2.exe with a fresh one.

djlaptop's nocd can be found at http://www.beaconpedestal.com/nocd. It isn't listed anywhere on the main site, so you'd have to know where it was.
Maybe the other nocd cracks could be put in an allow list, but then again what if a malicious game.exe was made with the same filesize as an allowed one? Or maybe the verifier looks at the actual code in the file.
