Shouldn't this be in the politics forum?
Anyway, I don't mind personal parental decisons, but I do mind when people try to force their decisions on others. People are perfectly capable of "censoring themselves," For example, I turned off gore and mature taunts on the Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo, probably bringing it down to a "Teen" rating. However, I'm not going to force that down somebody else's throat. Sure, I hate the Duke Nukem and Grand Theft Auto games, absolutely hate them, but should I rant about how there should be a law against them? Hell no.
Furthermore, ignorance is a key role in people hating video games. Many members of the press (Meaning gaming magazines, Gamespy, etc.) LOVE the Grand Theft Auto series. And, of course, like the rest of the media, if they say they like it, many, though not all, people will say, "That's a great game," all because some guy at Gamespy said so. Then parents, legistlators, and others see what the gaming media thinks and then come to the conclusion that all video games are evil and all of the players are pale, skinny, murderous maniacs. This is all because of ignorance.
Now to talk about "addiction" of video games. Look, I agree many kids DO have an addiction to video games, it's true. Playing video games 6+ hours a day is bad for you. As Scott Kurtz* explains, it's all about moderation. Don't buy a new game the day before an exam or something else that's important. You should KNOW you're going to play the night away, which that brings up another point. Make sure you have someone to make you go to bed, so you don't play until 3 AM. Yes, I've been there, and believe me, the next day isn't fun.
In conclusion, parents and other "figures of authority" should be enforcing the rules in their household instead of forcing their beliefs upon others. Be responible for you own actions, and others should do so as well.
* Scott Kurtz and Jerry of Penny-Arcade believed this was a hoax. I'd have to agree as this organization seems to have been "new" for more than year.
Note: I think this post is good enough to be posted as a rant on my site, what do you think?

The Cocks Suck!
Lol, gotta love the GTA3 pedestrians. And GTA is a great game, not nearly as violent as people make it out to be. In both games I only remember hearing like one "fuck" and they said other curse words fairly sparingly compared to the Getaway (which probably dropped the F bomb more than "the"). Still, both GTA and the Getaway are fantastic games that no one has the right to censor (its a shame, but Sony actually censored one of the torture scenes and removed a nude scene from the game for the NA release). If you can't handle it, don't buy it.
I hate these pretentious conservative types that spout on about how bad game violence is (although I know a few liberals do too). Seriously, the argument that someone could see someone get shot in a game and then go shoot someone in real life is stupid. But if that's the case, it makes more sense to take away the damn gun than the game...

Those crazy moms. Probably the same ones who tried to ban the "pregnant barbie" because it wasn't wearing a ring and was therefore against their religion. Crazy people.
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt (1918)
"The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect "domestic security." Given the difficulty of defining the domestic security interest, the danger of abuse in acting to protect that interest becomes apparent. --U.S. Supreme Court decision (407 U.S. 297 (1972)

First off, what are "The Cocks?" I'm totally lost here.
Second, I played GTA: Vice City, watched it for long periods of time, played it, and even TRIED liking it. It was hopeless. GTA is still one of the worst games out there. Unlike a game like, let's say Morrowind, where you can be anybody from a career criminal, to a noble Dudley-Do-Right. I love Morrowind, does that make me a hypocrite? Not one bit, I like the "freedom" of the game, be whoever you want. The reason I don't like GTA is because you have to be "bad". I want the option of being a righteous mob-killer.
Third, don't start with gun control, it only increases crime, and it's been proven time after time. Did you know that guns are used in four times more in self-defense than in crime?
So the point is though I loathe GTA, I'm not going to force them to not use it. Think of it, what if they hated Renegade and tried to force me to not play it? And also, moderation and common sense is the key to avoiding "addiction."
