Everythign comes down to surviability. If you dont have a military to defend yourself with high tech weapons, then your not going to survive. When will you tree hugging hippies learn this? :rolleyes:

There was an interesting program, I think during the 80's, that proposed a massive update to the F-15 design- it would have incorporated forward canards for additional maneuverability, as well as a thrust nozzle type very similar to the one on the F-22(able to be angled up and down). That variant, of which several prototypes were produced, had a much shorter takeoff run, higher fuel efficiency, and was a massive improvement over the current C and E variants. The program was, of course, scrapped due to its projectedcost, but it would have brought the F-15 up to par with the F-22's performance(all except for stealth) without the need for a whole new airframe(and at least a decade or two earlier).

Ditto. Good training goes hand in hand with quality, up-to-date equipment. Lose either, and your military becomes less effective. Every so often, our military hardware needs to be updated so that it can beat anything it might come up against in combat. That way, we don't have to suffer casualties due to outdated technology.
Also, it's the old "he who has the biggest gun makes the rules" line- we want to be the ones that have the biggest gun, so that we don't get picked on by other nations. A huge part of security comes straight out of a fear of what could be done to you as a consequence of your actions- if you see that your opponent has a weapon that is most assuredly going to kick the living crap out of you if you attack them, you'll probably think twice about it. Thus, even if they are never used in combat, shiny new war machines make this country a safer place.
