I say put another character in the middle slightly enlarged, shaded dark slightly, and slightly trasparent. And make sure its behind the other two characters and not in front of them. You may also want to make the sword shine like the gun.

Wow that looks good only problem is then its siding more toward the trigun side and less toward the kenshin side.
as for the lens flare i could get it to work for some reason all it was doing was making the sword brighter.

Hmm. . . ya, I didn't think of that when I got the picture, so maybe if you were to add two characters, one from Trigun and one From Kenshin, or one character from some other anime. . .
OT: I haven't ever watched Kenshin, what is it about? I liked Trigun though pretty good, I watched it over the summer on cartoon network at 1 AM every night LOL.
